Now that I have chosen my channel that I would like to redesign my ident for, it is important that I now show my initial ideas for the channel. Below are my 3 initial ideas for the idents:
Initial idea number 1
For my first initial idea I am thinking of putting the ident in the morning around 10:00am. This is straight after morning live which is a news programme. The reason why I would like to put my ident there is due to the audience being able to have a clear idea on what shows are going to be presented. The ident will show transitions of different people doing different things to bring the whole channel together. From Big Ben - the London Eye - people playing football - people looking at buildings - casual things people do in the U.K. This ident will also include the following:
Sound effects in the background
Big Ben
A voice over
Music in the background - (The news music)
Initial idea number 2
For my second initial idea I am thinking of putting the ident in the afternoon around 13:00pm. This is after when a few shows have been presented. The reason why I would like to put my ident there is due to the news which is about to appear. The ident consists of people doing research about the BBC One - doing sports - cars on the highway - socialising. This ident will also include the following:
A voice over
Music in the background
Initial idea number 3
For my final initial idea I am thinking of putting the ident in the evening around 10:00pm. This is straight after the news about weather and sport. The reason why I would like to put my ident there is due to the audience being unaware about what is going to show next. Furthermore, the ident will show people sitting back and relaxing as the ident will be presented in the evening. This ident will also include the following:
A voice over
Music in the background
A family sitting down watching TV - but will also zoom into the TV and show the variety of programmes the channel presents.
Below is a sum up of what I would like to add in the ident overall.
An ident is helpful as it announces the upcoming programmes and provides information which can be heard audibly. When looking at an ident I think that one of the main conventions that are used is to show the name of the channel. This is because the ident needs to show what the channel is and what it represents. One way it can be shown is the music that is played in the background. This helps the audience identify what channel it is. When looking at previous idents, they show the logo of the channel. This is another main convention of an ident. It is useful as it allows audiences to understand what the channel is representing as well as what is going to appear next. Another main convention of an ident that it is used is for the now and next. When idents are occurring, it typically happens when there is a break between the programmes. This gives audience time to get away and once they return, they will get an imprint of what is going to show next. This is known as a ident bumper. Sometimes idents help the audience connote what is going to occur next on the channel. This allows the audience to figure out what is going to show next as the ident provides clues before giving the answer. In regard to my channel BBC One, I can say that with the ident is clearly shows the logo (at the end of the ident) and tells the audience what is going to occur next on the channel. When we compare the channel to other idents on different channels, we can see that the other idents are animated and may have some funky music. When we look at BBC One we can see that this channel is about a range of programmes. This means that the ident for BBC One needs to be more of a serious one as it needs to meet the target audience for the specific programmes.
I have decided to choose BBC One to recreate the ident.
BBC One History.
This channel was launched on 2nd November 1936. However, the channel was not originally called BBC One. It was called BBC Television Service. Over time it was given multiple names such as BBC TV and BBC Channel. Then the channel was called BBC One as it is the main channel for BBC. BBC One was the world's first regular television service that provided a high level of image resolution.
Below has the idents from 1936 to 2023.
From watching the first ident that was created in 1936, we can see that BBC One has said how they do not recommend the programme to certain age groups or people with disabilities. Here we can see that BBC One had thought very carefully on its audience. Within this ident the logo of the channel was different as well as they style. This shows that technology was not as developed at the time, but it still appealed to the audience.
Skipping into the video further at 01:20 the ident has improved significantly. This is because the ident has got colour which attracts the audience. In the ident it started to show and state what is appearing on next on the channel. Furthermore, within this ident we can see that there is more happening in relating to the images. For example, the Earth moving around. This shows the audience is more diverse and how the channel has grown.
Now moving on to present day, in the video 03:40 we can see that the quality of the ident has improved significantly from 1936. This is because the camera quality is better, the graphics have improved and also the audio is a lot clearer. This shows that BBC One has improved its overall image and has gained a massive audience.
One similarity that BBC One has is that the logo has not changed. This means that BBC One has kept their original logo and therefore has made it a nostalgic symbol. However one difference that the channel has had is that the front of the logo has changed. This is because the channel has grown and needed to show a professional look. Overall, we can see that throughout the century BBC One has evolved and has changed its way of producing idents as it has met all different types of requirements when looking at different times over the past.
After investigating Freeview, the idents I would like to redesign is for BBC One and Dave.
BBC One.
BBC One is British free-to-air public broadcast TV channel. Throughout this channel there a variety of different programmes that show the life and what people do. For example, one of the programmes: Homes Under The Hammer shows someone buying a property and renovating it. Whereas later on there is another programme: Bargain Hunt. In the image below, it shows the daily schedule of the channel from 09:15 in the morning to 14:15 in the afternoon. Furthermore, this shows what is being presented now and next.
The overall target audience for the channel is 15–29-year-olds. For example, the first show that is presented at 09:00 in the morning is Morning live. This is to entertain the audience and have a discussion about a certain topic. Furthermore, other programmes later on in the channel shows a variety of jobs that young people might be interested in. This helps people of these ages as they can discover what jobs they might want to do in the long-term.
I think that the message and theme of the logo is trying to project maturity. This is because of the colour scheme. The colour scheme is simple and elegant which indicates what type of programmes are being presented and what the age ratings of them are. Further points are made on the image on the right.
There are a variety of idents that is used for BBC One. However, one of the idents that have been used for more than a decade is shown below. The ident is a classic one and it shows a range of colours and weather events which attracts the audience to go and find out what is about to be shown. The overall purpose of the ident for this channel is to attract new audiences and keep them entertained before the programme is presented.
Overall in my opinion I think that when audiences are trying to figure out what channel they would like to watch BBC One is a channel that they will be able to remember. This is because it is unique and due to that audiences can recognise instantly compared to other channels.
Dave.
Dave is a comedy channel that airs a mix of original programmes that have been presented over the last 3 decades. Throughout this channel there a variety of different programmes that show the comedy of life. For example, one of the programmes: "Would I lie to you?" is a comedy where contestants have to bluff about their deepest secrets. Whereas later on there is another programme: Top Gear. That show is about 3 presenters taking cars all around the world while competing in funny challenges along the way. In the image below, it shows the daily schedule of the channel from 09:00 in the morning to 15:00 in the afternoon. Furthermore, this shows what is being presented now and next.
The overall target audience for the channel is 25–44-year-olds. For example, the first show that is presented at 09:00 in the morning is Fast Justice. This is to entertain and inform the audience. Furthermore, other programmes later on in the channel shows a variety of different programmes which people are entertained by. Another reason why the channel is for 25–44-year-olds is because the audience grew up with those shows and maybe able to understand the comedy better.
I think that the message and theme of the logo is trying to project maturity. This is because of the colour scheme. The colour scheme is simple which indicates what type of programmes are being presented and what the age ratings of them are. Further points are made on the image on the right.
There are a variety of idents that is used for Dave. However, one of the idents that have been used for more than a decade is shown below. The ident shows a marching band which are playing the classic Dave soundtrack. This helps build suspense for the audience as they are eager to find out what is going to happen next. The overall purpose of the idents for this channel is to show what programme is up next and start the audience off with a laughing mood. This is helpful as Dave can gain new audiences from this.
Overall in my opinion I think that when audiences are trying to figure out what channel they would like to watch Dave is a channel that they will be able to remember. This is because it brings a nostalgic tone and has programmes that are memorable for the target audience so that can relate to this. Dave also brings the reputation of its name being unique and therefore can be catchy for audiences to remember.

This means that the audience has been shown what the director is trying to present to them. Therefore, I think that the ident has conveyed the video successfully.
Concluding paragraph
Out of all the promos that I have analysed, I think that the most important promo is The Flash trailer.
The purpose of the promo shows the audience that the series is coming to an end. I think that the director has done a great job of this because the audience is understanding the overall message. Furthermore, the narrative is the best out of all the promos. This is because it connects with the audience and makes them feel upset that the production is coming to an end.
However, the promo that I find the least affective is the trailer Ready Player One. Although the trailer shows that the key aspects and shows some purpose of the film, I think that it could've been improved. One way I would do this is by showing more about the quest and who is competing. This would have been more affective as it would have helped the audience have a clearer idea of what the film is about. This would have improved the purpose of the trailer as well.
Finally, both of the trailers show purpose and tries its best to connect with its audience, but I think that the best promo that really connects and shows the purpose is the promo of The Flash.
In unit 15 I have been asked by Freeview to create an ident for one of their channels of my choosing. This ident can be either 1 x 60 second feature ident or a 2 x 30 second idents. I will discuss which choice I am going to choose as well as the channel in the future blog posts.
Defining Audio-Visual Promos.
Audio visual promos are an important tool used by media companies to get the attention of a media audience about a new product that is going to be released or needs to be relaunched. This ensures that the product is going to get noticed by the audience and maximises exposure. To sum up audio visual promos, they carry out the following actions: inform, educate, entertain and sell products.
